The essential experiences

01

Durrës Amphitheatre

Enter one of Albania’s most important Roman monuments, built in the early 2nd century and later adapted with an early Christian chapel. Check opening and restoration information before visiting.

02

Castle walls and Venetian Tower

Follow the surviving Byzantine walls to the Venetian Tower and nearby historic streets. This compact area reveals layers of Durrës between antiquity and the medieval Adriatic.

03

Archaeological Museum

The museum holds finds from Greek, Illyrian, Roman and Byzantine Dyrrachium. As restoration schedules may affect access, confirm that the galleries have reopened before planning your visit.

04

Vollga and Currila

Walk the seafront promenade at sunset, stop for seafood or coffee and continue toward Currila for city-and-sea views away from the busiest central streets.

05

Kavaja, Golem and Qerret

Explore Kavaja’s local centre, then choose the long sandy coast at Golem or the calmer resort atmosphere of Qerret. Both are practical bases for family beach holidays.

06

Spille Beach

Travel farther south for fine sand, shallow water and pine forest. Spille is a relaxed choice for families and visitors seeking a quieter beach day than central Durrës.

07

Bashtova Castle

Add a countryside detour to this distinctive medieval fortress near the lower Shkumbin. Access roads and site conditions can vary, so check locally before departure.

08

Cape Rodon

For a longer excursion north of Durrës, combine coastal hiking, quiet coves and the ruins of Skanderbeg’s 15th-century castle on a dramatic Adriatic peninsula.

What to eat

Choose fresh Adriatic fish, grilled seafood, risotto, byrek and seasonal salads along the coast. Try tavë kosi, homemade meatballs and syrup-soaked desserts inland, and ask local restaurants about the catch and dishes of the day.

A SIMPLE ITINERARY

Four days around Durrës and Kavaja

Day 1

Explore the amphitheatre, castle walls, Venetian Tower and historic centre, then walk the Vollga promenade at sunset.

Day 2

Visit the Archaeological Museum if open, spend time around Currila and enjoy a relaxed seafood dinner beside the water.

Day 3

Travel through Kavaja to Golem and Qerret for a full Adriatic beach day, choosing the atmosphere that suits you best.

Day 4

Continue south to Spille and Bashtova Castle, or choose Cape Rodon for nature, walking and coastal history.

Plan your trip

Best time

April to June and September suit sightseeing and quieter beaches. July and August are hottest and busiest. Winter is calm, but many seasonal beach businesses close.

Getting around

Central Durrës is walkable. Trains and buses are limited for a flexible coastal itinerary, so a car or taxi is useful for Kavaja, Spille, Bashtova and Cape Rodon.

How long

Two days cover Durrës city. Add one or two nights for Golem, Qerret, Spille or an excursion to Bashtova and Cape Rodon.

Travel responsibly

Use marked access at archaeological sites, carry out beach rubbish, avoid dunes and protected vegetation, and never climb unstable ruins.
