Elbasan and Librazhd follow the Shkumbin valley along the historic route of Via Egnatia. Begin among Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman layers inside Elbasan Castle, then travel east to Librazhd and the protected landscapes of Shebenik–Jabllanicë.
Elbasan, Librazhd and Shebenik
From castle walls and the Clock Tower to high meadows, ancient forests and glacial landscapes.

The essential experiences
Elbasan Castle
Enter a historic neighbourhood still woven into daily city life. Walk the cobbled lanes to the Clock Tower, King Mosque, Church of Saint Mary and traditional houses within the surviving fortifications.
Via Egnatia and ancient Scampis
Discover Elbasan’s Roman roots at the crossroads of Via Egnatia, the imperial route that connected Dyrrachium with Byzantium. Traces of the road are displayed around the castle area.
Elbasan city and Byshek
Explore the centre, local museums and cafés, then consider a short outing toward the green surroundings of Byshek. Ask locally about access and seasonal conditions.
Librazhd and the Shkumbin valley
Follow the river valley east to Librazhd, a practical gateway for mountain travel. Stop for local food and arrange transport or a guide before continuing into remote areas.
Shebenik–Jabllanicë National Park
Hike through forests, alpine meadows and glacial landscapes in one of Albania’s major protected areas. Trails and weather vary greatly, so use local guidance for longer routes.
Rrajca, Fushë Studë and Stebleva
Discover mountain villages, traditional hospitality and quieter access points to the park. Rrajca’s ancient beech forests form part of a transnational UNESCO World Heritage property.
What to eat
Look for Elbasan’s famous ballokume, tavë kosi, byrek, stuffed peppers, meatballs, mountain dairy products, honey and seasonal preserves. Small restaurants and guesthouses are ideal for asking what is prepared locally that day.
Three days from Elbasan to Librazhd
Explore Elbasan Castle, the Clock Tower, religious monuments and traces of Via Egnatia, then enjoy dinner in the city.
Travel through the Shkumbin valley to Librazhd, stop in town and continue with a local guide toward Fushë Studë or an accessible park trail.
Choose a deeper nature day around Rrajca, Stebleva or Shebenik’s lakes and meadows, based on weather, road conditions and your experience.
Plan your trip
Best time
Spring and autumn suit city walks and lower trails. Summer is best for high mountain routes. Winter can be beautiful but snow may limit roads and access.
Getting around
Elbasan is walkable, but a car is useful for Librazhd and nearby villages. Remote park roads and trails are best approached with current local advice or a guide.
How long
Two days cover Elbasan and a light Librazhd excursion. Allow three or more days for a meaningful visit inside Shebenik–Jabllanicë.
Travel responsibly
Stay on established trails, carry out all rubbish, avoid disturbing wildlife and use experienced local guides for alpine lakes and remote forest routes.
This guide uses Albania’s official tourism information and is written for trip inspiration. Museum hours, park access, weather and mountain roads can change; verify locally before setting out.
