Northeastern Albania rewards slow travel: Kukës opens toward Gjallica and Shishtavec, Lake Fierza leads west to Tropoja, and the Valbona River carries you deep into the Albanian Alps.
10 essential Kukës & Tropoja experiences
A complete route from the Kukës plateau to Valbona and Tropoja’s protected landscapes.
01Kukës City & Lake View
Start in a modern city built above the waters that covered Old Kukës. Walk the centre and viewpoints to understand its unusual setting between mountains, the Drin system and the Kosovo border.

02Lake Fierza
Follow one of Albania’s largest reservoirs as it winds between Kukës and Tropoja. Use established viewpoints or licensed boat services and never approach dam infrastructure or isolated shores without local advice.
Photo & information source ↗Gjallica Mountain
Kukës’s landmark mountain rises to 2,489 metres and offers broad views over the basin. Summit routes are steep and exposed; hire a local guide, start early and check weather carefully.

05Bajram Curri
Use Tropoja’s main town as the practical hub for transport, supplies and local culture. Walk the centre, learn about Bajram Curri and arrange guides or transfers before entering remote valleys.

06Valbona River Valley
Enter a great limestone valley shaped by clear water, forest and towering peaks. Stay in a local guesthouse and choose short valley walks before committing to longer mountain trails.

07Xhema’s Lake
Take a short forest detour to this small seasonal lake near the valley road. Its water level changes with rain and snowmelt, so the most vivid view is not guaranteed in dry summer periods.

08Rragam & Upper Valley Trail
Continue toward the last inhabited village and the route to the snowmelt-fed waterfall. Spring offers the strongest flow; in every season use proper footwear and avoid unstable slopes and river crossings.

09Kukaj Village Trail
Walk from the valley floor toward a small settlement beneath dramatic peaks. The route offers a quieter taste of pastoral life, but conditions and trail markings should be confirmed with your host.

Discover one of Albania’s most strictly protected natural landscapes and UNESCO-listed primeval beech forests. Access is limited and sensitive: go only with authorised local guidance and leave no trace.
Photo & information source ↗What to eat
Look for flija, maize pies, beans, mountain cheese, yoghurt, roast lamb or goat, beef cooked under a saç, potatoes, forest honey and seasonal preserves. Guesthouses often serve set dinners made from local products.
Five days from Kukës to Valbona
Explore Kukës and its lake viewpoints, then enjoy the city’s evening rhythm beneath Mount Gjallica.
Choose a guided Gjallica hike or a full road trip to Shishtavec, the plateau and Morning Rock.
Follow Lake Fierza toward Bajram Curri, stop at safe viewpoints and continue into Valbona for a guesthouse dinner.
Walk the valley, visit Xhema’s Lake and choose either the Rragam waterfall route or the gentler Kukaj trail.
Explore Dragobi and Tropoja’s heritage, or arrange a specialist nature day toward the Gashi River protected landscape.
Plan your trip
Best time
June to September is best for alpine access. May brings stronger waterfalls but lingering snow; autumn offers colour, cooler days and reduced services.
Getting around
A reliable car is strongly recommended. Drive mountain roads in daylight, download offline maps and confirm whether seasonal roads require higher clearance.
Hiking safety
Check weather and trail conditions with your host, carry water and layers, and hire a local guide for Gjallica, remote villages or protected-area routes.
How long
Allow five days for both regions. If crossing Valbona Pass to Theth, add at least two days and arrange luggage, transport and accommodation in advance.
This guide uses Albania’s official tourism information and established cultural and image sources. Access, trails, transport and water levels change seasonally; verify locally.
