Laç and Kurbin bring together two very different experiences: the powerful pilgrimage tradition of St Anthony’s Sanctuary and the peaceful coastal world of Patok Lagoon. The Mat River and Shkopet Lake make a natural extension inland.
8 essential Laç & Kurbin experiences
Every stop includes a real image, practical guidance and a link to its photo source.
01St Anthony’s Church of Laç
Climb to one of Albania’s most important pilgrimage sanctuaries. Rebuilt after the communist period, the church welcomes people of different faiths, with the greatest gathering around 13 June.

02Cave of Saint Vlash
Beside the sanctuary, this small rocky grotto is part of the site’s interfaith tradition. Enter quietly, follow local customs and give priority to worshippers, especially on feast days.

03Laç Hill Viewpoint
Pause on the sanctuary terraces for a broad view over Laç, the Kurbin plain and, in clear weather, the Adriatic lowlands. The final approach is steep, so wear secure footwear.

04Patok Lagoon
Explore calm water, reed beds and a shifting coastal landscape on the border of Kurbin and Lezhë. Patok is best enjoyed slowly, with time for photography, fresh air and sunset.

05Patok’s Overwater Restaurants
Dine in the wooden cabins set above the lagoon and order local fish, prawns or seasonal seafood. Ask for the day’s catch and confirm prices before ordering larger platters.

06Birdwatching at Patok
The lagoon forms part of a wider protected coastal mosaic used by resident and migratory birds. Bring binoculars, keep distance from wildlife and avoid disturbing reeds or nesting areas.

Follow the Mat corridor east of Milot to see how the river links Kurbin’s plain with the mountain gorges. Stop only at safe pull-offs and never enter fast or unfamiliar water.

08Shkopet Lake
Continue into the Mat gorge for deep blue-green water, steep slopes and a memorable scenic drive. Local operators may offer fishing or boat trips; check safety, weather and road conditions first.

Patok is the region’s signature food stop: choose fresh fish, prawns, eel when available, salads and simple local sides in the overwater restaurants. Around Laç and Milot, look for byrek, grilled meat, seasonal vegetables and traditional home-style dishes.
Two days around Laç and Kurbin
Visit St Anthony’s Church early, enter the Cave of Saint Vlash respectfully and enjoy the hilltop views. Continue to Patok for a late seafood lunch, lagoon photography and sunset.
Spend a quiet morning birdwatching around Patok, then follow the Mat River from Milot toward Shkopet Lake for gorge scenery and a relaxed return journey.
Plan your trip
Best time
Spring and autumn are comfortable for both the sanctuary and lagoon. June is important for the pilgrimage but extremely busy; summer evenings are best at Patok.
Getting around
A car or taxi is the easiest option between Laç, Patok, Milot and Shkopet. Expect steep walking at the church and changing road conditions in the gorge.
How long
One full day can combine the church and Patok. Add a second day for wildlife observation and the scenic Mat–Shkopet route without rushing.
Visit respectfully
Wear appropriate clothing at the sanctuary, keep silence near worshippers and never photograph people closely without permission. Protect lagoon habitats and take all waste with you.
